Portugal Schengen Visa Information
Portugal is one of the 27 Schengen countries.
Schengen Area Countries:
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Visa Rules for Multiple Schengen Countries:
If visiting multiple Schengen countries, Portugal must be the country where you spend the maximum duration of stay.
If the stay in each Schengen country is equal, Portugal must be the first country of entry into the Schengen Area.
Mandatory Documents & Additional Requirements:
Each applicant must provide all mandatory documents listed in the requirements section.
The embassy or visa experts may request additional documents as needed. Providing these promptly is essential for a successful visa outcome.
Visa Fees & Processing Time:
Visa fees may vary based on exchange rate fluctuations of the Euro.
Visa fees are non-refundable, regardless of approval or rejection.
Processing times are indicative and may be subject to changes.
1. How many days in advance can I apply for a Schengen Visa?
You can apply for a Schengen visa up to 3 months before your travel date. Applications submitted earlier than this will not be accepted.
2. Can I travel to Portugal if I am fully vaccinated with Covaxin?
Yes, Portugal allows Indian travelers vaccinated with Covaxin, provided the second dose was administered at least 14 days before the departure date.
3. If I have a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa on my old passport, can I travel with both my old and new passports?
This depends on the specific Schengen country. Some countries allow travelers to carry both passports if the visa is still valid on the old passport, while others require the visa to be transferred to the new passport. We recommend checking with our Shiva YSR expert team before traveling.
4. Can I travel with a long-term multiple-entry visa issued before the biometric process began?
Yes, if your long-term multiple-entry visa was issued before the biometric requirement was introduced, you can still travel using that visa.
5. Is the biometric process required every time I apply for a Schengen visa?
As per Schengen regulations, biometric data (fingerprints and facial scan) remains valid for 59 months (nearly 5 years).
If your biometric data has already been recorded after November 2, 2015, you may not need to submit it again for a new visa.
However, some Schengen countries require biometric submission for every application, and in some cases, you may be asked to resubmit biometric data due to issues with the previously captured information.
To confirm your specific requirement, consult our Shiva YSR expert team before applying.
6. Do I need to appear in person for visa submission?
Yes, as of November 2, 2015, Schengen countries have made biometric submission mandatory. All applicants must personally visit a Visa Application Center (VFS) or the respective Consulate/Embassy to complete the biometric process, which includes fingerprinting, palm scanning, and live photo capture.
7. Which countries are covered by the Schengen visa?
A Schengen visa allows travel to all 27 Schengen countries, including Portugal, unless restrictions are specified on the visa sticker. While additional visas are not required for travel within the Schengen Area, travelers must carry supporting documents (such as proof of stay and financial means).
Schengen Countries:
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
8. What is the Schengen Zone?
The Schengen Area is a group of 27 European countries that have removed internal border controls to allow the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital. Under this agreement, a single Schengen visa grants access to all participating countries.
This system simplifies travel across Europe, as borders exist only on maps, and movement between Schengen countries is similar to traveling within a single country.
